Adam J. Altman, M.D.
- Dr. Altman, a corneal specialist, joined Eye Consultants of
Pennsylvania in September 1995. Dr. Altman received his
undergraduate degree at the University of Massachusetts at
Amherst, Magna cum Laude. He received his medical degree from
the University of Massachusetts Medical School in 1985. He
performed an ophthalmology residency at Duke University Medical
Center in Durham, North Carolina from 1986 to 1989. Dr. Altman
completed a Cornea and External Eye Disease fellowship at the
prestigious Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He
was certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology in 1990.
Dr. Altman has presented several papers at Wills Eye Hospital's
Annual Conferences, including; Streptococcus Pneumonia and
Scleritis, Pterygium Surgery, Peripheral Ulcerative Keratitis,
and Recurrent Erosion Syndrome. He served as an Assistant
Professor of Ophthalmology, Cornea Service at Wills Eye
Michael Cusick, M.D.
- Dr. Cusick, M.D. joined Eye Consultants of Pennsylvania in 2010 as a
specialist in vitreo-retinal diseases and surgery. Dr. Cusick completed
his undergraduate and medical degrees at Georgetown University in Washington,
DC. During his medical training, Dr. Cusick worked as a Howard Hughes Scholar
in clinical research at the National Eye Institute (NEI), National Institutes
of Health (NIH). He then completed his residency training in Ophthalmology at
The Wilmer Eye Institute of the Johns Hopkins Medical Center in Baltimore,
Maryland. Dr. Cusick then completed a 2-year medical and surgical vitreo-retinal
fellowship at the Duke Eye Center in Durham, North Carolina. During his fellowship,
he was awarded the Heed Foundation Award and was selected as the Duke Eye Center
Hornaday Fellow for excellence in teaching, ethics, and research. He was certified
by the American Board of Ophthalmology in 2009. During his career, Dr. Cusick has
been active in clinical research. His publications and research activities have
included: diabetic macular edema and the Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study
(ETDRS), macular degeneration and the Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS),
retinopathy of prematurity, sickle-cell retinopathy, and retained lens fragments
after cataract surgery. He has presented his work at national and international
meetings including the annual meeting of the American Society of Retina Specialists
(ASRS) and the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO).
Goldberg, M.D., F.A.A.P. - Dr. Goldberg completed his
Ophthalmic Residency at Louisiana State University and his
Pediatric Ophthalmology Fellowship with the renowned Zane
Pollard, M.D. of Eye Care Associates in Atlanta, Georgia. He has
a special interest in Oculoplastic Surgery in both children and
adults. Dr. Goldberg graduated with high honors from Princeton
University and served an externship at Wills Eye Hospital. He
graduated from the University of South Florida Medical School as
a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honorary Society. Dr. Goldberg
will be a welcome addition to our Pediatric and Adult Strabismus
practices, which continue to expand significantly in the
Reading, Pottsville, Pottstown and Lancaster regions.
Yun Katherine Hu, M.D., M.S.
- Dr. Hu joined The Eye Consultants of Pennsylvania in February 2009 as a
comprehensive ophthalmologist. Dr. Hu received her undergraduate degree from
the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign, Summa Cum Laude. She subsequently
attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison and received a Master degree in
Biochemistry. She completed her medical education at the University of Virginia
School of Medicine, where she was elected into the Alpha Omega Alpha National
Medical Honorary Society, and graduated first of her class in 2004. She also
received the American Medical Women's Association Glasgow-Rubin Achievement
Award for academic excellence. After serving an internship in Internal Medicine
at the University of Virginia Medical Center, she performed her Ophthalmology r
esidency at the prestigious Wilmer Eye Institute of Johns Hopkins Medical Center
in Baltimore from 2005 to 2008. Prior to her medical career, Dr. Hu was involved
in medical research, as a graduate student as well as a research scientist at the
National Institute of Health. She also has interests in international ophthalmology.
She had visited and worked in eye hospitals in China and India after her residency.
Dr. Hu currently holds part-time associate academic appointment and works as a
preceptor for residency education at the Wilmer Eye Institute.
Winifred W. Kao,
M.D., F.A.C.S. - Dr. Kao graduated from the University
of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey-Robert Wood Johnson
Medical School in 1987. She completed her Otorhinolaryngology,
Head and Neck Surgery Residency at the Temple University
Hospital, Philadelphia 1992. In 1992 Dr. Kao joined Berks E.N.T.
Surgical Associates, Inc. Dr. Kao is Board Certified and her
practice encompasses all aspects of Otorhinolaryngology. She has
particular expertise in the area of endoscopic sinus surgery,
the most advanced form of sinus surgery. She is also actively
involved in the Cochlear Implant program at The Reading Hospital
and Medical Center.
Lawrence Kenney, M.D. - Lawrence Kenney M.D. joined Eye Consultants of Pennsylvania in October of 2009. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia, attended Temple University School of Medicine and performed a rotating surgical internship at Temple University Hospital. He completed his ophthalmology residency at Greater Baltimore Medical Center in Baltimore, Maryland including a two month rotation in Ophthalmic Pathology at The Wilmer Eye Institute in Baltimore. After completion of his training in 1987, Dr. Kenney worked in private practice at Sanatoga Ophthalmology Associates in Pottstown, Pennsylvania until joining Eye Consultants of Pennsylvania.
Barry C. Malloy, M.D.
- Dr. Malloy, Vitreo-Retinal Specialist, received his
undergraduate training at University of Massachusetts at Amherst
and received his Medical Degree from University of Massachusetts
Medical School. He completed his medical internship at Berkshire
Medical Center, and his residency in ophthalmology was served at
the University of Kansas Medical Center. Dr. Malloy completed a
Vitreo-Retinal fellowship at Washington Hospital Center in 1990.
He is certified by the National Board of Medical Examiners and
by the American Board of Ophthalmology. He performed research in
Medical Treatment of Diabetic Retinopathy and Vitamin Therapy
for Retrolental Fibroplasia. He was the recipient of the
University Scholar Award for Academic Achievement from the
University of Massachusetts.
Michael A. Malstrom, M.D.
- Dr. Malstrom joined The Eye Consultants of Pennsylvania in August
2008 after completing his residency at Wills Eye Institute in Philadelphia.
He grew up in Idaho where he attended Ricks College (a junior college
where his father was a professor) and graduated Magna Cum Laude. He
finished his Bachelor's degree Cum Laude In Psychology at Brigham
Young University. His medical education was completed at Temple
University School of Medicine. Dr. Malstrom possesses a broad
knowledge of the assessment and treatment of the whole eye but has
special interest in helping people see better through cataract surgery.
Darryl Mueller, M.D.
- Dr. Mueller graduated from the University of South Alabama College
of Medicine in 1999. He completed his Residency in Otorhinolaryngology,
Head and Neck Surgery at Temple University Hospital, Philadelphia, in 2006.
Dr. Mueller joined Berks E.N.T. Surgical Associates, Inc. in 2008. He is
Board Certified and his practice encompasses all aspects of ear, nose,
and throat disorders. His interests include diseases involving sinus and
allergy, pediatric ENT, voice and swallowing disorders, thyroid tumors, and
abnormalities of the ears, hearing and balance systems. He is actively
involved in the Cochlear Implant program at The Reading Hospital and Medical
Mehul H. Nagarsheth, M.D.
- Dr. Nagarsheth received his Bachelor's
Degree Cum Laude in Neuroscience and Behavioral Biology with a dual major
in Political Science from Emory University in Atlanta, GA in 2004.
Dr. Nagarsheth received his medical degree from Drexel University College
of Medicine in June 2008 where he continued to complete his internship.
He performed his ophthalmology residency at Case Western Reserve University
Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio from 2009 to 2012. During his chief year of
residency, Dr. Nagarsheth also traveled abroad to Hyderabad, India where
he completed a medical and surgical ophthalmology elective at the LV Prasad
Abhishek K. Nemani, M.D.
- Dr. Abhishek K. Nemani is a Board Certified Ophthalmologist, specializing in the
medical and surgical treatment of Glaucoma and Cataracts. He joins us from the
prestigious Scheie Eye Institute at the University of Pennsylvania where he served
as a full-time faculty member and the Assistant Residency Program Director.
Dr. Nemani was honored with the “Fellow of the Year” teaching award after
completion of he Glaucoma Fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania, where
he later practiced. He received his Bachelor’s Degree from Wilkes University
and his Medical Degree from the State University of New York Upstate Medical
University in Syracuse, where he also completed his residency in Ophthalmology,
serving as Chief Resident in his final year.
Dr. Nemani is excited to bring his years of experience at the University of
Pennsylvania and Philadelphia VA Medical Center to Berks County.
Jonathan D. Primack, M.D.
- Dr. Primack received his undergraduate degree Magna Cum Laude from Washington
University in St. Louis. He attended the Washington University School of Medicine
and subsequently served as an Intern at Lenox Hill Hospital. He performed his
Ophthalmology Residency at the Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City. Dr.
Primack next completed a two year Cornea, External Disease, and Refractive Surgery
Fellowship at the Massachusetts Eye & Ear Infirmary at Harvard Medical School.
While at Harvard, he was a recipient of the prestigious Heed Ophthalmic Fellowship.
For over four years, Dr. Primack has served as the Director of Refractive Surgery
at the North Shore - Long Island Jewish Medical Center in Long Island, New York.
He currently holds an academic title of Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology and
Visual Sciences at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Primack is Board
certified by The American Board of Ophthalmology.
Kevin J. Shah, M.D.
- Dr. Shah, a native of New York City, joined Eye Consultants of Pennsylvania
in 2016 after serving as faculty at the Cole Eye Institute at Cleveland Clinic.
Dr. Shah, a board-certified cornea and cataract surgeon, brings a variety of modern surgical techniques
to the Cornea Service at Eye Consultants of Pennsylvania, specifically:

Dr. Shah was the first surgeon in Berks County to successfully perform Deep Anterior
Lamellar Keratoplasty (DALK); a partial cornea transplant for patients with severe cornea
scars and keratoconus.
After obtaining his undergraduate degree from Northwestern University, Dr. Shah earned his
medical degree from SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, NY and completed his
ophthalmology residency at Manhattan Eye and Ear Throat Hospital (MEETH) / New York University.
He then completed a fellowship in Cornea and External Disease at the Cincinnati Eye Institute/University
of Cincinnati under the mentorship of Edward J. Holland, MD, an internationally recognized leader
in cornea transplantation and ocular surface reconstruction.
During his fellowship, Dr. Shah specialized in astigmatic and presbyopic correction during
cataract surgery, ocular surface reconstruction, limbal stem cell transplantation and partial
corneal transplantation procedures. As faculty at the Cleveland Clinic, Dr. Shah helped train
residents and fellows in advanced corneal disease and mentored them in the operating room
during cataract surgeries and corneal transplantations.
Dr. Shah is well published in peer-reviewed journals and has a specific interest in treating
Fuchs Dystrophy. He has authored several book chapters, specifically focusing on the surgical
techniques for DMEK, Herpes Simplex Keratitis, and Corneal transplantation in patients with
ocular surface disease. He also serves on the accreditation board for the Eye Bank Association
of America (EBAA), the accrediting body for donor eye banks in the United States.
Toso, M.D., D.D.S., F.A.C.S. - Dr. Toso graduated from
the University of Bologna Medical School, Italy in 1956. He
completed his Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery
Residency at the Newark Eye & Ear Infirmary, New Jersey in 1963
and started his practice in Reading, Pennsylvania in 1964. Dr.
Toso has been the leader in the development and advancement of
ear surgery. In 1986 he started The Reading Hospital & Medical
Center Cochlear Implant program with Elca Swigart, Ph.D.,
becoming the first surgeon in Eastern Pennsylvania to perform a
cochlear implantation. Dr. Toso is Board Certified and his
practice encompasses all aspects of Otorhinolaryngology. He
specializes in ear surgery, and has developed advanced
techniques for reconstruction of the ear canal and elimination
of the mastoid cavity after ear surgery. He served as Section
Chairman of the Department of Otolaryngology, The Reading
Hospital and Medical Center until 1997.
Anastasia Traband, M.D.
- Joining Eye Consultants of Pennsylvania in October 2017 is Dr. Anastasia Traband, a specialist in Retina and Vitreal Diseases. She completed her Vitreoretinal Surgery Fellowship in June 2017 from the renowned Scheie Eye Institute at the Penn Medicine Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. Dr. Traband received her Bachelor’s Degree from George Washington University and her Doctorate in Medicine from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. She served her internship at Lankenau Medical Center in Wynnewood, then completed her residency in Ophthalmology at Boston University Medical Center where she was Chief Resident during her final year. She will be seeing patients in our Wyomissing, Pottsville and Pottstown locations.
Dr. Traband is an attending surgeon at Reading Hospital-Tower Health, Pennsylvania Eye & Ear Surgery Center, Physician Care Surgical Hospital and Surgery Center of Pottsville. She, her husband, and newborn son recently relocated to Wyomissing, Pennsylvania.
Joseph R. Watson, D.O.
- Dr. Watson graduated from the University of Medicine and
Dentistry of New Jersey, School of Osteopathic Medicine in 1998.
He completed his Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck, and Facial
Plastic Surgery Residency at the Philadelphia College of
